Excerpt from The Threefold Witness in support for the title of this website.

Introduction: Over all John presents 3 aspects of God’s witness to the Son of God.  He relentlessly hammers home a correct view of the Lord Jesus Christ, who He is, and that He is essential to salvation.  That’s the point.  But I also want us to see the importance of the Trinity, the Triune God, and in this section he points out three sets of a threefold witness including an important distinction as to when & if a word is to be capitalized.

But may I call your attention to the fact that God has preserved His word and I believe that He is faithful to watch over it for us.  We ever have enemies working tirelessly to change it in order to confuse God’s people.

I.    THE PARTICULARS OF GOD’S TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST (v. 5-9)

II.  THE PURPOSE OF GOD’S TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST (v. 11)

III. THE PROPER RESPONSE TO GOD’S TESTIMONY OF JESUS CHRIST

                                                                                                                   (v. 10, 12)

THE PARTICULARS OF GOD’S TESTIMONY OF HIS SON, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST  (1 Jn. 5:5-9)-verse 5 is the theme.

Three things in this passage (vs. 5-8)  brings out this point:

  1. An Incarnational Passage, (v. 6) INWARDLY WITNESS (see Rom.8:16)

  2. A Trinitarian Passage, (v. 7) HEAVENLY WITNESS

  3. A Sacrificial Passage, (v. 8) EARTHLY (CROSS) WITNESS

  1. AN INWARDLY WITNESS.  The Spirit of Truth bears witness IN us who Jesus is.  Jesus came by water and blood-virgin birth-He’s God’s Son. This is the water sack in Mary and like all births there’s blood-here it’s God’s Blood.  It’s a private witness by “the Spirit is truth” so I can’t undo the belief.  NOTE: Brings us to the First Rule of Capitalization;

When the word “Spirit” refers to God’s Spirit doing a transforming work of grace on the inside of a believer it is ALWAYS Capitalized as here in v. 6.  A True Cambridge Bible.

This Is True Whether We’re Talking About:

  1. The Spirit of Our Father God (Matt. 10:20)

  2. The Spirit of the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 1:19)

  1. The Spirit of Adoption (Rom. 8:15)

  2. The Spirit of Grace (Heb. 10:29)
